The pros dominated last weekend’s SoCal tennis headlines, with Coco Vandeweghe (Rancho Santa Fe) leading the charge in Fed Cup action, taking down Germany in the quarterfinals at Maui. The American squad – including Shelby Rogers, Alison Riske, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands – swept all four matches to set up a semi-final meeting with Czech Republic in April. Vandeweghe told the USTA, “It’s really a team effort,” Vandeweghe said. “It’s a home tie for a reason. I think that was a big motivating factor for me to come out there and represent my country. I don’t really need much of a reason more to give everything I have out there on the court. That was kind of it.”

Asia Muhammed (Long Beach) continued a sparkling 2017 with a spot in the semifinals at Launceston, Australia, bowing out against fellow American and eventual champion Jamie Loeb. Muhammed’s current singles rank at #133 is her career high.

Also in Australia, Daniel Nguyen (Oxnard) worked hard to reach the semifinals, where he lost in straight sets to tournament winner Noah Rubin (USA). The 26-year old Nguyen currently sits at #287 on the ATP World Rankings. In Turkey, Alexios Halebian (#647) of Hollywood, reached the semifinals in Men’s Futures.

This week is a busy one for SoCal athletes, with Men’s competition in Memphis and Tempe. Sam Querrey (Santa Monica), Steve Johnson (Redondo Beach), Jared Donaldson (Irvine), and Taylor Fritz (Palos Verdes) highlight the field in Memphis, while Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina) and Mackenzie McDonald (Los Angeles) highlight the field in Tempe.

The Women battle in Qatar, Perth, and Surprise, AZ this weekend. Vania King (Monterey Park) and Julia Boserup (pictured above) of Newport Beach are in the qualifying field at Qatar.
