Giron Returns To Play USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas

CALABASAS, Calif., — Former NCAA singles champion Marcos Giron of nearby Thousand Oaks, Calif., along with two former Pepperdine standouts, will be part of the field for the 2017 USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas, which will be played March 20-26 at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Club.

Giron, ranked No. 443, is a former Calabasas champion. The former UCLA star, who beat Jason Jung in the 2014 final, is also one of eight Americans set to play in the $25,000 Futures event.

Calvin Hemery, a 22-year-old from Paris, France, will be the No. 1 seed. Hemery is ranked No. 309. The highest seeded American in the tournament is Tommy Paul of Boca Raton, Fla., who will be seeded No. 2.

Among other top players in the field are two former Pepperdine stars — Finn Tearney and Sebastian Fanselow. Tearney, from Wellington, New Zealand, is ranked 414 and Fanselow, of Germany, is ranked 394.

Several other seeded Americans in the field include Christian Harrison, Peter Kobelt, Jared Hiltzik, Will Spencer and Evan Song.

Qualifying rounds for the tournament began Saturday, March 18. Singles play in the 32-player main draw will begin on Tuesday, March 21. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, March 25, with the doubles and singles finals set for Sunday, March 26.

The ITF tournament, playing in Calabasas for the 17th year, will also feature several fun events involving players and sponsors.

On Sunday, March 19, there will be a pro-am from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The pro-am will feature a round-robin format for sponsors to play with the ATP pros. A barbecue dinner will follow at 6:30.

On Thursday, March 23, there will be a USTA Coaches Workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by sponsor-partner dinner reception from 7 to 10 p.m. At the reception there will be a raffle with a silent and live auction.

Championship weekend begins on Friday, March 24, with quarterfinal matches. Friday’s busy day begins with a Pro-am drill from 9 to 11 a.m. and later that night a Community Tennis Appreciation Night. During the Friday evening session local USTA and WTT captains and other San Fernando Valley area tennis leaders will be recognized.

There will also be a VIP/Sponsor-Partner Reception, USTA League Player Challenge and Stadium Court Junior Exhibitions on Friday, March 24.

Saturday’s events include the semifinals along with a USTA Junior Team Tennis Kid’s Tennis Carnival from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
