From junior competition to pros in action around the world, SoCal athletes notched some impressive finishes this weekend.
At the Maze Cup at Stockdale, Southern Cal’s finest juniors competed against their counterparts from the Bay area in an annual showdown leading into Sectional Championships. This year, NoCal bested our locals in a superb weekend of high level tennis. Trailing 8-6 on the final day, SoCal Boys swept their Sunday schedule – but NoCal’s Girls roster returned the favor and dominated Sunday action, securing the team victory, 13-10. The annual tournament moves back to Northern California next spring.
On the pro side, Julia Boserup (Newport Beach) reached the quarterfinals at the WTA event in Monterrey, Mexico, continuing her climb into the Top 100 to reach #86, tying her career high. Top seed Mackenzie McDonald (Los Angeles) fell to eventual winner Jared Hiltzik in the semifinals of the Pro Circuit event in Memphis, then prevailed with a doubles championship alongside teammate Lloyd Glasspool.
This week, the US Clay Court Championships kick off in Houston, featuring Jared Donaldson (Irvine), Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina), Steve Johnson (Redondo Beach), Sam Querrey (Santa Monica), Jack Sock, John Isner, Frances Tiafoe, and Donald Young.
