Some of Southern California’s top men’s and women’s Open players took to the courts on Thursday in the 131st Annual Southern California Open Sectionals. Divisions in singles, doubles, mixed, and father-son are being contested and currently taking place at the Lakewood Tennis Center with the finals set for Sunday.
In the Men’s Open Singles first round, former UCLA player Daniel Kosakowski of nearby Downey opened play with a win over Attila Lassu, dropping just two games.
In the Women’s Open Singles quarterfinals, unseeded 19-year-old Sofia Booth had a nice three-set upset over top-seeded Regina Pitts, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, while seeds Kelly Chen, Ryan Peus and Jwany Sherif all advanced to the semifinals to join Booth.
In a Men’s Open Doubles Round of 16 match on Thursday, No. 2 seeds Austin Rapp and Billy Rowe needed three sets to beat Arizona’s Jarod and Spence Hing, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0
In the Father-Son Doubles, USC Men’s Coach Peter Smith is top-seeded along with son Colter. The pair face Sean and Wade Murphy on Friday at noon at Lakewood Tennis Center.
