After receiving first-round byes, top-seeded Usue Arconada of Rio Piedras, P.R., and second-seeded Claire Liu of Thousand Oaks, Calif., will play their opening matches at the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships on Monday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Arconada, who has been ranked as high as No. 218 in the world, will play Alexandra Vesikallio of Bay Village, Ohio. Liu, this year’s Wimbledon girls’ singles champion, will face Kathy Wang of San Diego, who outlasted Taylor Gruber of Spicewood, Texas 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 in Girls’ 18s first-round action on Sunday.
In the Girls’ 16s singles draw, top-seeded Fiona Crawley of San Antonio got through a difficult first set in her second-round match, but rebounded to eliminate Avery Aude of Woodland Hills, Calif., 7-5, 6-1.
The 15-year-old Crawley, who won the USTA Girls’ 16s National Clay Court Championships last month in Virginia Beach, Va., will face 33rd seeded Anna Campana of Hillsborough, Calif., in a third-round match on Monday.
