WEEKEND WRAP: SoCal has impact in Davis Cup win

The top two #SoCal men on the ATP Tour were front and center in Nashville as the United States rolled through the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup, as Sam Querrey (Santa Monica) and Steve Johnson (Redondo Beach) rounded out the #TeamUSA squad that will now move to the semifinals for the first time in six years. John Isner and Ryan Harrison joined Querrey in notching singles wins, and Harrison paired with Jack Sock to lock up the doubles point. Davis Cup semifinals are scheduled in September, when the US squad will meet Croatia.

In Carson at the #USTA International Spring Championships, San Diego’s Brandon Nakashima toppled Tristan Boyer (Altadena) in the Boys 18s final. Boyer competed in both singles and doubles finals, and was understandably digging deep into the reserves after playing 32 sets in the past few weeks. Still, Nakashima was cool and consistent in posting a solid 6-0, 6-0 championship win.

Hurricane Tyra Black was the Girls’ winner, in three sets over Georgia Drummy.

The Men’s tour shifts to clay as we head toward Roland Garros. Querrey, Johnson, Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina), Taylor Fritz (Palos Verdes), and Mackenzie McDonald (UCLA/Los Angeles) headline the main draw, while Bradley Klahn (Poway) is slated for the tournament qualifier. Bob & Mike Bryan lead the charge in doubles play.

In Florida, the USTA Pro Circuit at Indian Harbour Beach features Kayla Day (Santa Barbara) in the main draw, while Ashley Kratzer (Newport Beach) is on court with the Pro Circuit in Alabama.

The WTA International event in Bogota will include Nicole Gibbs (Santa Monica) and the former USC Trojan doubles tandem of Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian in action.
