Two big pro titles for #TeamUSA and #USTennis this past weekend as some of #SoCalTennis top ranked stars notched impressive wins overseas. Let’s recap in our #WeekendWrap!
The US #FedCup team advanced to the finals with a 3-2 win over France, and will face Czech Republic in November’s finale. Rancho Santa Fe’s Coco Vandeweghe fell in singles competition, but wins by Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens put the US in position to secure a shot at defending their Fed Cup title. The entire US Fed Cup team, which also includes Bethanie Mattek-Sands, will head to Stuttgart, Germany for a WTA Grand Prix event this week.
At Monte Carlo, Bob & Mike Bryan (Camarillo) won their sixth title at the event, a straight set in over Marach/Pavic. It was the twins’ 116th ATP Tour title, a standing record they will look to extend when they resume play in Barcelona this week. Jared Donaldson (Irvine) and Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina) also compete in singles at Barcelona.
Danielle Lao (Arcadia) reached the quarterfinals of the WTA Series event in Zhengzhou, China, and remains in China for an ITF Pro Circuit event this week.
Isaiah Strode (El Cajon) teamed with Oklahoma’s Christopher Hayworth to win the doubles title at the USTA Pro Circuit Futures in Orange Park, Florida.
Dana Mathewson (San Diego) was a singles finalist at the Busan Open ITF Series wheelchair event in South Korea. She was a doubles finalist in a similar event in Korea last week.
Also this week, Kayla Day (Santa Barbara) and Ashley Kratzer (Newport Beach) are in Charlottesville, Va. On the USTA Pro Circuit, and USC product Sabrina Santamaria (Los Angeles) competes in singles at the ITF in Wiesbaden, Germany.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale) will be on court for the ATP Challenger in Leon, Mexico.
This week also marks the return of the annual Ojai Championships, featuring open, junior, and collegiate competition. The 118th edition of the Ojai begins Wednesday with PAC12 and Community Collegiate matches, and all tournament finals will be played on Sunday, beginning with Juniors at 8am. Nearly 500 juniors age 14-18 will compete throughout the week, in addition to 127 adults in the Open draws and players from Division I, II, and III tennis programs.
