The latest from SCTA’s Junior Sectionals, held this week in Orange County:
As early rounds kick off at Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club and surrounding locations, seeded players were dominant following a day of lopsided play, yet there were a few surprises in early round action.
In Girls 18s, Michele Deng (Temple City) scored an upset over her accomplished opponent, rebounding after dropping the opening set for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Anne Lutkemeyer of Irvine. In the same division, both Rena Lin (Northridge) and Britt Pursell (Oceanside) rolled off twelve straight games to win 6-0, 6-0 in their opening round match. Top seeded Taylor Johnson (Redondo Beach) won in a routine straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 over Aniya Holloway (Chino Hills).
In Boys 16s, top seed Timothy Li (Valley Village) dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Two seeded players were upended in Boys 18s, including Mitchell Davis (Encinitas) over Henry Lovett (6-3, 6-4) and Kyler Jirasook (Walnut) over Los Angeles’ Diego Huttepain (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
In Boys Doubles, the top seeded tandem of Fullerton’s Eric Hahn & Jack Pulliam (Manhattan Beach) were upended in the quarterfinals by Benjamin Gollin (Solana Beach) & Matthew Tsolakyan (Glendale) in a third set tiebreaker before being eliminated by (4) Poe/Sillman.
Julia Deming (Fallbrook) & Rena Lin, the top seeds in Girls doubles, put up a fight in their opening match tiebreaker but were ousted by Bendetti/Dunkle in a 14-12 final set.
