Fun and fantastic tennis happened in San Diego with its first ever USTA Net Generation Community Tennis Workshop in that area. The event was hosted by USTA Southern California and it was enjoyed by about 20 coaches at Rancho Penasquitos Tennis Center, a beautiful 12 court facility nestled in the green hills of North San Diego County.

The USTA’s Net Generation brand of youth tennis included a community progression of skills, fitness and game-based learning that blended fun with sport development. The workshop was designed to assist coaches from clubs, organizations and National Junior Tennis & Learning chapters in San Diego.

“This was great for veteran pros as well as beginning NJTL coaches,” said PTR Coach Jenny Hinrichs, the Head NJTL Pro at Murphy Canyon Recreation Center in San Diego. “The games and activities are easy to do and this workshop gave us a step by step plan.”

In addition, many veteran USPTA and PTR Certified teaching professionals attended the training to learn more about Net Generation tennis.“I’ve been to many of these trainings but there is always something new to pick up,” said USPTA and PTR certified Coach Lois Sczepaniak, the Head NJTL Coach for the East County Community Tennis Association.

Cheryll Olivas-Dieli, the director of the NJTL Barona Indian Reservation tennis, found value in racket and ball games as well as the athletic development component.

“It’s really important to help young players be more athletic,” said Olivas-Dieli. “I love the Net Generation program because it achieves that goal while having a lot of fun.”

The training was led by SCTA Tennis Service Representative Karen Ronney, a USPTA and PTR certified pro and former USTA 10-and-Under Faculty member. Rancho Penasquitos Tennis Center and its staff hosted the event and donated court time for the USTA Net Generation Community Tennis Training.
