A toasty week on court at Barnes Tennis Center hasn’t affected the quality of play at the 2018 USTA Billie Jean King Girls Nationals, which continues through the weekend in San Diego.

Top seed Kayla Day (Santa Barbara) made short work of her opponent on Tuesday, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the 18s Round of 64. She next meets Camille Kiss (Redlands) in a SoCal showdown. Salma Ewing (Lakewood), winner at last weekend’s USTA SoCal Open Sectionals, has an appointment with Eastern’s Michelle Sorokko in the Round of 32, while Vivian Cheng (Santa Monica) faces Southern’s Chloe Beck. Rena Lin (Northridge) had a battle on her hands on Tuesday, facing second set elimination before locking down the three-setter to move on in the 18s bracket, meeting Florida’s Kacie Harvey on Wednesday.

SoCal’s Salma Ewing (USTA)

In Girls 16s, Hina Inoue (Huntington Beach) recovered from a second set drubbing to defeat Carmen Corley (Southwest) 6-4, 0-6, 6-3. She faces Florida’s Elaine Chervinsky in the Round of 16.

Both doubles brackets are well underway, with Casie Wooten (Torrance) keeping SoCal hopes alive in 16s. She remains in the hunt alongside teammate India Houghton (NorCal) in the Round of 16.

In 18s, the San Diego tandem of Julia Haynes & Amy Huang have a tough draw ahead, facing top seed Osuigwe/McNally in the next round. Taylor Johnson (Redondo Beach) and her partner Elisia Bolton (Eastern) meet a tandem of Charlottes, including Charlotte Chavatipon (Fullerton) and Florida’s Charlotte Owensby.

Also alive in the Round of 32 are Sophie McKenzie (Woodland Hills), Taylor Johnson, Vivian Cheng, Salma Ewing, Rena Lin & Julia Deming (Fallbrook), and Nicole Mossmer (La Jolla).
