The story of the US Open so far has been the emergence of young talent on the grand stage at Flushing Meadows. As veteran seeded players faced elimination throughout the first week, names like Osaka, Gauff, de Minaur, and Medvedev made progress towards becoming the new faces of tennis.

But there are more on the way, and many of the fresh young guns are coming straight from Southern California. Beginning today at the Open, a host of #TeamSoCal juniors look to make a splash and join the ranks of tennis’ new breed.

The Boys’ Juniors is packed with familiar names, many with legitimate chances to win in both singles and doubles. Led by San Diego’s Zachary Svajda – who thrilled the first round crowd in a five set marathon last Monday – the #TeamSoCal contingent includes #8 seed and Aussie Open junior finalist Emilio Nava, #11 seed Brandon Nakashima, UCLA’s Govind Nanda, and National 16s finalist Aidan Mayo.

Woodland Hills’ Katrina Scott emerges from a successful Girls’ Nationals stint to lead #TeamSoCal into New York, along with Charlotte Chavatipon of Fullerton. For those who enjoyed the Nationals in San Diego last month, familiar names include 18s champion Katie Volynets and finalist Emma Navarro, and 16s champion Reese Brantmeier.

The doubles brackets will be announced later this week, expected to feature some of SoCal’s brightest collegiate and junior players. Nava, the cousin of ATP pro Ernesto Escobedo, was a US Open junior doubles finalist in 2018.
