USTA Southern California has announced its “All-SoCal College Team” for 2022 to celebrate the accomplished collegiate tennis players who’ve emerged from the Section and its array of junior programming. The players were selected based on their competitive success, academic accomplishments, and their reflection of sportsmanship.
We congratulate these and all SoCal-based college scholar-athletes for their ongoing achievements as representatives of #TeamSoCal!
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Kimmi Hance of Torrance, California, currently posts 4 wins in both singles and doubles in her Freshman year. From Torrance, she was the 2020 Orange Bowl International Championships doubles winner, and also made the UCLA Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in Fall of 2021.
Charlotte Chavatipon of Fullerton, California posted 12 singles wins in 2021. The Sophomore at UT Austin is an Exercise Science major. Chavatipon has a career high ITF singles ranking of 223, and a career high WTA singles ranking of 574.
Kelly Chen of Cerritos, California is a four time ITA All-American, having also been named Second-Team all-ACC with the Duke Blue Devils. The ITA Scholar Athlete from Cerritos posted 13 singles wins and nine doubles wins with two victories against top 10 opponents in singles competition.
Christine Canete of Los Angeles, California, has posted 5 singles wins as well as 5 doubles wins with Central Oklahoma. The Freshman plays with her older sister Mae who is a Sophomore at Central Oklamoma.
Mae Canete of Los Angeles, California, has posted 5 singles wins as well as 5 doubles wins with Central Oklahoma. The Sophomore was undefeated in singles last season and has 12 doubles wins. She plays alongside her younger sister Christine who is a Freshman at Central Oklahoma.
Winta Woldeab of La Mesa, California is a winner of the USTA Southern California Evelyn Houseman Junior Sportsmanship Award. From La Mesa, California, Woldeab is class of ‘25 and formerly played on the U18 Southern California USA National Team and has also won first place at the USTA Carmell Valley Women’s Open.
Julia Deming of Fallbrook, California posted 7 singles victories and 9 doubles victories alongside partner Malkia Ngounoue. Deming also made the Academic All-Big 12 First Team with a 4.0 GPA in Sports Management. Deming is a Senior at the University of Kansas.
Haley Giavara of San Diego, California, finished 2021 with a No. 27 ranking in singles and a No. 50 ranking in doubles alongside Valentina Ivanoc. Giavara had 12 singles wins and 15 doubles wins and is currently a Junior majoring in Legal Studies.
MEN’S TENNIS
Timothy Sah of San Diego, California, helped the Stanford Cardinal to a PAC-12 Title in 2021 after posting 8 singles wins and 9 doubles wins. The fifth year senior majoring in Computer Science is a winner of the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award as well as the ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award and is a four time ITA Scholar Athlete.
Ryan Nuno of Sylmar, California, had a standout season with Azusa Pacific, making All-PacWest Second-Team in singles and First-Team in doubles alongside partner Sam Sippel. The class of ‘22 Exercise Science major, finished the season 19-3 in doubles and posted a 14-3 singles record, including two straight victories over ranked opponents in the PacWest Tournament
Stanley Morris of Santa Monica, California, secured an ITA Cup Singles Title for Middlebury as a Senior. He is also a member of the NESCAC All-Academic team and he has previously been an ITA All-American in singles and a member of the ITA All-Academic team as well.
Ian Freer of South Pasadena, California, made the Semi Finals of the ITA West regionals in singles and the Quarter Finals in doubles. Freer is in the class of ‘25 at Claremont McKenna and finished the fall with a No. 26 ITA singles rank Nationally as well as No. 9 in the West in singles and doubles. Freer was awarded ITA Rookie of the year as well as ITA All-American honors in doubles.
Christian Settles of Claremont, California, is a former ITA-Scholar Athlete and a 2-Time SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll recipient. The Communications and Sports Management major at Trinity College has had 2 semesters on the Dean’s list.
Noah Zamora of San Diego, California, is a recipient of the USTA Southern California, Evelyn Houseman Lifetime Junior Sportsmanship Award. The Criminology major is a former two-time Western League Player of the Year and previously won the 2021 San Diego Section CIF Boys Singles title.
Kyle Pham of Newport Beach, California, is a Junior at Southern Methodist University and former winner of a CIF Southern California Regional title. Pham helped create the SCTA Court Monitoring service that has benefited countless Junior tennis players in California.
