Here’s a look ahead to Sunday’s final day of competition at the 2018 Junior Sectionals!
In Girls 18s, top seed Taylor Johnson looks to continue an impressive week of play when she meets Elizabeth Goldsmith in Sunday’s semifinal (10am, Los Caballeros). Neither player has dropped a set headed into tomorrow’s matchup. Rena Lin and Kimberly Hance will lock up in the other semifinal (10am), and the finalists will meet in a 12pm finale.
In Boys 18s, number one seed Seam Woldeab meets Matthew Tsolakyan (10am) in the first semifinal. Tsolakyan escaped a three set challenge in the quarterfinal to advance, while Woldeab has yet to lose a set. Jake Pulliam also emerged from a three set marathon in the quarters, and will meet Omni Kumar in the other semifinal (10am).
In Girls 16s, top seed Maxi Duncan has yet to lose more than two games in a set this week. She faces (5) Jordyn McBride (12pm) in the first semifinal. Justine Dondonay, the #3 seed, meets unseeded Kaia Wolfe in the second semi.
In Boys 16s, (1) Timothy Li was dominant in his quarterfinal, losing only one game. He faces Johnny Zisette at noon on Sunday. The #2 and #3 seeds battle it out in the other semifinal (12pm), a match-up of (2) Takeyasu Sekiguchi and (3) Renaud Lefevre.
Girls 14s are right on target, with the top four seeds advancing to the penultimate round. Calissa Dellabarca, the top seed, meets (3) Madeleine Jessup in the first semifinal. Dellabarca has blanked each of her opponents in at least one set throughout the tournament. Kaila Barksdale (2) and Amanda Perez (4) face off in the other semi. Both are slated for 12pm Sunday.
Based on the unique seeding process, there are three (5) slotted players in the Boys 14s semifinals. The first, Marcus Sebastian, scored an impressive upset of top-seed Sean Daryabeigi in the quarterfinals. The win set up a battle of the Sebastians on Sunday, when he faces Sebastian Gorzny. Masato Perera, the #3 seed, meets (5) Rithvik Krishna in the other semi, both at 12pm.
Carla Pacot, the Girls 12s number one seed, has also notched a 6-0 set in each of her Sectionals matches this week and is a heavy favorite headed into Sunday. On the Boys’ side, Steve Nguyen is among the four semifinalists who have yet to drop a set in the tournament so far.
In the 10s division, Alexander Basamakov meets Rishvanth Krishna at 2pm Sunday in the Boys’ final. Mikayla Hickman meets Julieta Pareja in the Girls 10s finale.
