WHAT: Two one-time national awards of $7,500 each given annually to two young people aged 14-21 who have diabetes and play tennis competitively in tournaments or on their school team. Eight regional awards of $3,000 each will also be granted. The awards are to be used for education, tennis development, and/or medical care. Winners of the two national awards will be presented their awards by Billie Jean King, Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby in 2019 – date and location to be determined.

WHY: To honor the achievements and determination of two long-time World TeamTennis, Inc. executives, Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby, and to encourage young people with diabetes to lead full, active lives. Diane and Tracey Donnelly are sisters who grew up living with diabetes. Diane and Tracey were diagnosed with Type I diabetes as children and have taken multiple injections on a daily basis ever since. Their father also has Type I diabetes. Introduced to tennis by their parents at a young age, Diane and Tracey went on to compete in high school and national events. Both earned full athletic scholarships to Big Ten universities. Diane was an all-American and NCAA doubles champion at Northwestern University and Tracey achieved all-Big Ten honors at the University of Iowa.
Diabetes is no match for these dynamic women. With the same spirit that characterized the legendary career of Billie Jean King, Diane and Tracey lead full, healthy, and active lives. Their diabetes has taught them to be disciplined and to stay in top physical shape.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: You must: 1) be between the ages 14 to 21 (male or female); 2) in good academic standing at school; 3) be able to provide doctor’s confirmation of diabetes diagnosis; 4) currently be a competitive tennis player either in high school or college, or in tournaments; 5) show strong personal character, values, sportsmanship and community involvement; and 6) demonstrate financial need as indicated on the application.
