Friday Roundup
OJAI – The Men’s and Women’s Open singles divisions are down to the final four at the 117th Ojai Tennis Tournament, with all semifinals taking place today.
Top-seeded Philip Bester, of Vancouver, knocked out Cecil Mamiit, 6-4, 6-3, in one Friday quarterfinal. Bester will face Los Angeles resident Haythem Abid, who squeaked by Keegan Smith, of Point Loma, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Unseeded Henry Craig reached the semifinals in defeating Torrey Pines High School senior Jacob Brumm, 6-2, 6-4. Third-seeded Clay Thompson, a former UCLA standout from Venice, faces Craig in the other semifinal after dispatching Long Beach’s Tanner Smith, 6-2, 6-1.
The 16-player Women’s Open singles draw began Friday. San Diego’s Hannah Zhao upset No. 2 seed and Laguna Niguel resident Kristina Smith, 6-2, 6-4, and will face No. 4 seed Salma Ewing, of Long Beach, in a semifinal.
The Pac-12 Championships conclude today at Libbey Park. Pac-12 men’s regular season champion UCLA beat Stanford 4-0, and third-seeded USC dispatched No. 2 seed Cal 4-1 in Friday’s semifinals to set up the fifth UCLA-USC final in the six years the Ojai Tennis Tournament has hosted the men’s Pac-12 Championships.
USC won the Pac-12 in 2012 and 2015, and UCLA in 2013, 2014 and 2016. The rivals will meet for another Pac-12 title at 6 p.m.
The Ojai is hosting a Pac-12 women’s team championship for the first time this year, and that will be an all-Bay Area affair after regular season champ Stanford blanked Oregon 4-0 and second-seeded Cal eliminated USC, 4-3. The women’s Pac-12 final will be contested at Libbey Park at 3 p.m.
ibbey Park hosts the prestigious CIF Boys singles and doubles semifinals and championship matches today. Peninsula High’s Connor Hance and San Marino High’s dynamic duo of Connor Lee and Bryce Pereira are alive as The Ojai’s defending champions and the top seeds in the division’s singles and doubles draws.
The UCLA-bound Hance rallied from a set down in Friday’s third round match to overcome Matthew Mu of The Bishop’s School, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. He then rolled in his quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-3 over Kento Perera of San Marcos and will meet Palisades’ Jake Sands, who eliminated Siem Woldeab, of Helix, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in the quarters. Woodbridge’s Stefan Dostanic ousted Newport Harbor’s Maxwell McKennon, 6-2, 6-4, in an all-Orange County quarterfinal and will face No. 2 seed Ryan Seggerman, of Coronado. Seggerman advanced when his opponent, Westlake’s Brandon Lam, lost the first set and had to retire in the second set due to injury while trailing 3-1.
In the CIF Boys doubles bracket, Lee and Pereira relinquished five games over two straight-sets wins, beating Corona del Mar High’s Matt Paulsen and Diego Fernandez del Valle, 6-2, 6-2 in a quarterfinal. Other semifinalists include brothers Ian and John Freer of St. Francis High, Palisades High’s Lucas Bellamy and R.J. Sands, and Harvard-Westlake High’s Jed Kronenberg and Adam Sraberg.
