CALABASAS, Calif., — Karue Sell registered the first big upset at the USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas when the former UCLA standout upset No. 2 seed Calvin Hemery of France 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center.
Sell, a qualifier from Jaragua du Sul Brazil, converted 76 percent of his first-serve points and faced just one break point en route to earning the victory in one hour and 10 minutes.
A busy Wednesday of first-round matches following Tuesday’s rain produced several thrilling matches. However No. 1 seed Mackenzie McDonald of Piedmont, Calif., had little drama in his match, dropping just three games in defeating Clay Thompson in a battle of former UCLA Bruins.
Of the remaining six seeded players only one failed to advance to the round of 16. No. 5 seed Finn Tearney of New Zealand, in a match that began Tuesday, was upset by Jan Choinski of Germany 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4).
The Choinski-Tearney match was not the only match on Wednesday to be settled in a third-set tiebreaker. Later in the day Fred Simonsson of Sweden rallied to defeat qualifier Gage Brymer, a senior at UCLA, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Other seeded players to advance to the round of 16 on Wednesday included No. 3 seed Tommy Paul of Boca Raton, Fla., No. 4 seed Sebastian Fanselow of Germany and 2014 Calabasas champion and No. 6 seed Marcos Giron of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
