USTA Southern California is pleased to provide a unique match play opportunity for our high level junior athletes. Beginning in January, USTA’s Scott Lipsky, Director of Player Development and College Readiness, will be conducting a weekday match play day (plus select one day weekend camps) where players can play and train in a stress-free environment, under the guidance of some top coaches in the section.
There will be two to three birth years attending each week throughout the section, and sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 8:00am-12:30pm at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. Lunch will be provided from 11:45-12:30pm.
The match play days/camps will be limited to 8 boys and 8 girls per camp. Personal coaches are welcome to attend any play day/camp in which their player is participating. For the first 2 months of the year, the schedule is as follows:
Play Date 1/8/20 – Birth Year 2007,2008, and 2009
1/15/20 – 2005, 2006
1/22/20 – 2003, 2004
1/29/20 – 2001, 2002, 2003
2/5/20 – 2007, 2008, 2009
2/12/20 – 2005, 2006
2/19/20 – 2003, 2004
2/26/20 – 2001, 2002, 2003
In order to improve, players need to learn how to play matches and there is no better way to do that then getting the top players together and feeding off of each other week in and week out. The chance for the players to compete in a stress-free non-tournament type environment will allow them to play matches while working on certain aspects of their tennis that cannot be achieved during tournaments. More importantly, through these days and camps, all the boys and girls can become friends, root for each other in tournaments, and help to create a “TeamSoCal” culture that will make our section feared throughout the country when competing in national tournaments.
Throughout these sessions, all the players will be expected to show the utmost professionalism on and off the court and represent themselves and USTA Southern California with respect. All players are expected to (a) be on time and ready to start the day at the designated hour, (b) treat the other players, coaches, and staff with respect, and (c) abide by the rules and spirit of the practice at all times.
