SoCal Teams Bring Home Hardware at 2021 USTA League National Championships


Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 players in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 300,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. Each year, over a two-month time span, leagues of varying NTRP levels from across the 17 USTA sections, compete for the national title at the The USTA League National Championships. This year, nearly 30 Southern California adult league teams qualified to compete at these championships and represent the USTA Southern California section.

Adult 55 & Over 8.0 Men’s — 1st place

So Cal’s 55 & Over 8.0 men’s team from Arcadia, California — dubbed the Seabiscuits — captured the national title at the 2021 USTA League National Championships, held October 22-24 held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. It was the first title of the event for a SoCal squad. The Seabiscuits defeated a team from Lafayette, Louisiana, 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Arcadia team defeated a team from Waipahu, Hawaii, 2-1 in the semifinals. The team is captained by Andy Chang and features: Fernando Hernandez, Kevin Frazier, John Capoccia, Brian Newhall, Kevin Paik, David Hansen, Allin Everman, Arthur Chen, James Hodge, Timothy Song, Leonard Loventhal, Victor Ho, James Min, Corey Brown, Joseph Caldito, Paul Moya and Jung Kim and plays at Arcadia Park.

Adult 55 & Over 9.0 Men’s — 1st place

Halloween weekend brought great success for Southern California’s League teams at the 2021 USTA League National Championship held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida from October 29-31. The 55 & Over 9.0 men’s team from Laguna Hills, California secured So Cal’s second national title of the Championships. After defeating Middle States’ team from Philadelphia to reach the finals, the Laguna Hills team swiped Bluffton, South Carolina’s team 3-0 to take home the gold! The team is led by captain Cory Fiene and features: Douglas Mathews, Jeffrey Johnston, Michael Kovar, Fred Morris, Tom Duddy, John Hammargren, David Porte, Russell Brose, Glenn Petrovic, Bruce Beinlich, Marc Roest, and Kevin Kearney, and plays at Nellie Gail Ranch Tennis Club.

Adult 55 & Over 6.0 Women’s — 1st place

The women’s team from Bakersfield, captured the national title at the USTA League Adult 55 & Over 6.0 National Championships held October 29-31 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. This was the first SoCal women’s team to take home the top trophy at these Championships. Led by captain Laurie Haagsma, the Bakersfield team defeated a team from Apollo Beach, Florida, 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Bakersfield team defeated a team from Annapolis, Maryland, 2-1 in the semifinals. The team features: Cindy Seibly, Agnes DeJong, Susan Frakes, Angela Echeverria, Rhonda McBride, Michele Buoni, Terry Echevveria, Linette Holliday, Laurie Haagsma, Marri Tillema, Michelle Pisano, and Dianne Benshoof, and plays at Bakersfield Racquet Club.
