TEAM SOCAL: Locals in the Hunt at Oracle Newport Beach Challenger

Southern California not only hosts the ATP Oracle Challenger Series this week, but also welcomes home some of SoCal’s most promising athletes who take the court today in the first round at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina), Taylor Fritz (Palos Verdes), and Bradley Klahn (Poway) lead the charge of locals in a Men’s field headlined by Japan’s Kei Nishikori. Claire Liu (Thousand Oaks), Nicole Gibbs (Santa Monica) and Kayla Day (Santa Barbara) are notables on the Women’s side, along with Julia Boserup (Newport Beach), who competes in the first round of doubles action later this afternoon.

In the qualifier which continues today, #8 seed Marcos Giron (Thousand Oaks) and JC Aragone (Yorba Linda) remain in the hunt.

And don’t forget the legendary Bryan Brothers (Camarillo), who remain on target for an Australian Open title with a spot in the quarterfinals. In the Aussie Junior draw, qualifier Tristan Boyer (Altadena) notched the first set in his second round match before falling to the #2 seed.
