CCCAA Men’s and Women’s State Championships

MEN: College of the Desert men’s tennis team defeated Northern California champion Foothill College, 5-1, to win the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Men’s Dual Team Tennis State Championship at Pierpont Racquet Club Wednesday during the opening day of the 119th Ojai Tennis Tournament. COD (19-1) won their 15th CCCAA State title and their first since 2011, which completed a stretch where COD won 14 State titles in 20 years (from 1992-2011).

COD’s Kalman Boyd and Alex Kuperstein were down 4-0 and 5-1 in No. 1 doubles, then rallied to win 7 of last 8 games and take the set 8-6 on a cross-court volley by Kuperstein. COD led 2-1 after the opening doubles session, then won in singles through Boyd, Kuperstein and Manfred Vogt to claim the State title.

Ten-time CCCAA State champion Foothill (15-2) played in its first CCCAA State final since 2015, and last won the CCCAA State title in 1997.

WOMEN: On a nearly perfect day for tennis at the Ventura College Tennis Center, the Orange Coast College women’s tennis team had a perfect ending to a storied season, defeating Foothill College 5-1 to capture the 2019 CCCAA State Tennis Championship. The win capped an undefeated season for the Pirates (22-0), who won their second title in the past three seasons and the program’s 10th state crown, overall.

Northern California Champion Foothill finishes the year at 18-2.

“It gave us an incredible amount of momentum,” said OCC head coach Chris Ketcham of the come-from-behind win in No. 2 doubles. “Not just on the scoreboard, but mentally. We knew that we just had to win three singles matches instead of four. It’s a big deal to get that edge in the doubles. I think that propels you with a lot more confidence and belief that you can finish off the team in singles.”
