Top Seeds To Play Opening Matches On Tuesday At USTA National Women’s 50-90 Hard Court Championships

Tuesday’s Schedule Slated to Begin at 8 a.m. (PDT) at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

After receiving first-round byes, the top seeds will play their opening singles matches at the USTA National Women’s 50-90 Hard Court Championships on Tuesday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
    
Former touring tennis professional Ros Nideffer is the top-seed and three-time defending champion in the 50 and over division. Nideffer, a resident of the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, captured 10 Women’s Tennis Association doubles titles and achieved a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 15 in the world in 1990. She will face unseeded Sheila Walker of Washington D.C., in a second-round match at 9:30 a.m.


    
Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif., is the top seed in the 60 and over singles division. The 64-year-old Karwasky, who is one of the top senior players in the world, is attempting to win the 60s national hard court title for the sixth consecutive year at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. She is scheduled to play her second round-match against San Diego’s Yoko Anderson at 11 a.m.
    
In the 70 and over division, top-seeded Brenda Carter of Charleston, S.C., will take on unseeded Carmen Almodovar of Bellevue, Wash., in second-round action at 12:30 p.m. and Roz King of San Diego, the top-seed in the 80 and over division, will play her first match of the tournament against unseeded Sally Bublitz of Winona, Minn., at 9:30 a.m.
    
Monday’s first-round action featured second-seeded Carolyn Nichols of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., who advanced to the second-round of the 60 and over division with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anna Greer of Boca Raton, Fla.  Nichols has reached the 60s singles final the past two years.

This week’s USTA Women’s 50-90 Hard Court Championships feature singles and doubles competition in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age divisions. The tournament, which concludes on Sunday, May 14, has attracted the top senior players from across the United States in each age group.

Matches will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 9 through Friday, May 12 and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14. (All times are PDT). La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis enthusiasts to view the tournament with free admission. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 45th Annual Men’s Senior Championships is also taking place this week in conjunction with the women’s events, and will include both singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over and 80 and over age groups. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments. Total participation for both the men’s and women’s tournaments is expected to be 300-plus players.
