UCLA senior Martin Redlicki opened up play at the Claremont Club Pro Classic with a three-set win over wild card Alberto Lim of the Philippines, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3, on Tuesday as main-draw action kicked off at the $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit Men’s Futures Tournament taking place at the Claremont Club.
The 22-year-old Redlicki from Boca Raton, Fla., won the 2016 NCAA doubles title with Mackenzie McDonald to earn All-America honors in doubles. This past season, Redlicki received All-America honors in doubles again, reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles championship with Evan Zhu, last year’s Claremont Club Pro Classic finalist.
Both Redlicki (semifinals) and Zhu (final) lost to No. 4-seed and former Pepperdine star Sebastian Fanselow from Germany last year at Claremont, with Fanselow needing a tight third-set tiebreaker to beat Redlicki in the match of the tournament.
In his 2 hour, 10 minute first-round match, Redlicki hit eight aces.
All eight first-round doubles matches were completed on Tuesday with the top-seeded team of Hunter Callahan and Robert Galloway needing a 10-point super tiebreaker to beat Miguel Diaz and Mark Stewart Meyer, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.
Callahan is 24 years old and from Lower Gwynedd, Pa. The former standout for Ohio State won his first ITF Pro Circuit doubles title earlier this year in Greece and then won the doubles title at the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Edwardsville, Ill., just four weeks ago.
