Stephen Weaver, the director of the Long Beach VA Wounded Warrior Tennis Clinics, is hosting the first-ever Up & Down Wheelchair Doubles Tennis Tournament at the El Dorado Tennis Center in Long Beach on Sept. 11. Here are the details:
Date : Sept. 8, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. with food afterwards for all players.
Intro : This First Annual Up & Down Wheelchair Doubles Tennis Tournament at El Dorado Tennis Center will be a community outreach and patriotic event which coincides with the 9/11 tribute happening at the US Open in New York City. Teams will feature one (1) wheelchair player to be teamed up with one (1) able bodied player. Veterans & active duty personnel from the Long Beach VHA, Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center, Seal Beach Naval Weapons Center, San Pedro Coast Guard Station are all encouraged to play with local players. Locals from greater Long Beach community tennis players & teaching pros, 3.5 to 5.5 level, as well as collegiate tennis coaches in the area have tentatively committed to playing in this event. Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) and USTA has desired to provide some FREE type events for the local wheelchair tennis playing community. Be prepared, as the SCTA has some of the top wheelchair players in the country.
Format: Fast Four Round Robin Tournament – first team to four games, no ad scoring. Teams will be switched after first round, second round, and third round, etc. Teams & players which earn the most points will have a playoff set for the finals. Teams will be paired one (1) wheelchair player to be teamed up with one (1) able bodied player of similar ability. Two bounce rule will only apply to the wheelchair player – all other tennis rules apply. Competitive and recreational players are encouraged to play.
