WEEKEND WRAP: All in a Day’s Work at Rancho Santa Fe

A little home cooking must have been the right formula for Kayla Day, who returned to the west coast last weekend for a triumphant Pro Circuit event in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Day, from Santa Barbara, garnered a runner-up trophy in singles and secured the top spot in doubles (with fellow American Caroline Dolehide) in a near sweep of tournament hardware. She now ranks in Singles at #184, and is the WTA’s 26th ranked American woman.  Her doubles rank, #487, is a career high.

Steve Johnson (Redondo Beach) and Sam Querrey (Santa Monica) both reached the quarterfinals of The ATP Open 250 at Delray Beach.  Earlier in the tournament, Querrey toppled Jared Donaldson (Irvine), but Donaldson saw a boost in his ranking to #91, a career high. The two later teamed together opposite Bob & Mike Bryan in doubles play.

All eyes shift this week to Acapulco for the ATP 500, leading up to Indian Wells in March. Querrey, Johnson, Taylor Fritz (Palos Verdes), and Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina) will appear in the Men’s main draw, along with Donaldson competing from the qualifier. Also in Mexico, Nicole Gibbs (Santa Monica) competes in the main draw while the qualifier includes Asia Muhammad (Long Beach).
