While most tennis fans worldwide focused their attention on Indian Wells last weekend, there was plenty to appreciate from Canada to Greece to Japan, as SoCal players sought international titles abroad.

Here at home, the mountainous environs of Indian Wells witnessed Sam Querrey’s chase for both singles and doubles crowns, the Bryan Brothers finale with Team USA opponents, the stunning defeat of top seeds, and the impressive performances of new champions hoisting trophies in the desert.

Daniel Nguyen has two wins in as many weeks in Asia.

In Texas, Steve Johnson (Redondo Beach) reached the semifinals of the ATP Challenger event in Irving, while JC Aragone (Yorba Linda) was a quarterfinalist in Drummondville, Canada. In an interesting turn, Daniel Nguyen (Oxnard), the former USC Trojan who swept three Futures events in Asia last summer, notched his second in as many weeks by winning the Nishi-Tokyo Pro Circuit event.

Former Paralympic silver medalist David Wagner (Chula Vista) had a bust weekend at the ITF Georgia Open, reaching the final in both Quad singles and doubles, winning the latter with teammate (and singles champion) Bryan Barten.

Another Trojan, Sabrina Santamaria (Los Angeles), doubles champion at Morgan Run last month, reached the tandems final of the Pro Circuit event in Heraklion, Greece.

Taking center stage this week is the Miami Open, with an entry list that very much reflects that of Indian Wells. On the women’s side, Coco Vandeweghe (Rancho Santa Fe) and Claire Liu (Thousand Oaks) are slated for the main draw while Nicole Gibbs (Santa Monica) looks to emerge from the qualifying rounds. For the men, Querrey, Johnson, Jared Donaldson (Irvine), and Taylor Fritz (Palos Verdes) will open in the main draw while Bradley Klahn (Poway) and Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina) will compete in the qualifier.

Locally, keep your eyes on Calabasas and the USTA Pro Circuit event that continues through the end of the week. Alex Sarkissian (Glendale) and JC Aragone are among the SoCal athletes competing at the Calabasas Swim and Tennis Center along with Los Angeles/USC champion Karue Sell and Long Beach champion Collin Altamirano.
