WEEKEND WRAP: Klahn is all Finals in Calabasas; Locals Alive in Miami

Bradley Klahn

At the USTA Mens Pro Tennis Championships in Calabasas, top seed Mackenzie McDonald (Los Angeles) exited in the semi-finals due to illness, paving the road for Germany’s Sebastian Fanselow to roll into Sunday’s final against Bradley Klahn (Poway). The German was on target and on all cylinders to defeat Klahn for the championship, but Klahn rebounded in the doubles final with Connor Smith to take the tandem crown.

In the early round of the Miami Open, Sam Querrey (Santa Monica) and Jared Donaldson (Irvine) were among those advancing to second week action in Florida. On the women’s side, Bethanie Mattek-Sands looked excellent in singles action after a semi-final appearance in Indian Wells earlier this month, and Venus Williams will remain in the hunt this week. Her sister, Serena, remains sidelines by injury.

US Futures will be on display en masse this week in Mexico at the Futures Pro Circuit event, including McDonald, Ernesto Escobedo (West Covina), Dennis Novikov, and Austin Krajicek.
